     A Christmas Carol

All act and scenes summary for "A Christmas Carol"


Act 1

Scene 1: Ebenezer Scrooge is a grumbling, materialistic old miser cold-hearted man who hates Christmas. As his life is depressing, he doesn't like his co-worker, Cratchit who his happy all the time. One day, his nephew, Fred invites him to come to join him and his wife for dinner but Scrooge refuses as he was mostly lonely in his childhood. Fred is also rich like his uncle (Scrooge) but he is more friendly and Religious.


Scene 2: In this scene, Scrooge sees his business friend Jacob Marley's ghost who died seven years ago but Scrooge doesn't believe it. Marley tries to warn Scrooge about something because of the chains he is covered with and tells Scrooge that 3 spirits will meet him at midnight. However, Scrooge thinks that Marley is just kidding


Scene 3: In this scene, Scrooge wakes at midnight and gets scared when he sees a ghost in his bedroom. He asks him if he was the ghost Marley was talking about and the ghost replies Yes, he was the ghost Marley talked about. He was the Ghost of Christmas Past. The ghost shows Scrooge his old school where young Scrooge is sitting and is very sad. His sister whose name was "Fan" gives him the great news that somehow their father had changed! He had become more kind and gentle and was also very understanding. Later, Past and Scrooge meet Mr.Fezziwig, his old boss in his office. Young Scrooge gets engaged with Belle. However, Belle leaves Young Scrooge as he loved his business more than her. 


Scene 4: In this scene, at around 2 P.M scrooge meets the Ghost of Christmas Present who takes him to the Cratchits house when Mrs. Cratchit suddenly bursts in. Scrooge sees how miserable their lives are but still are enjoying their time on Christmas. However, Scrooge gets sad/hurt when Mrs. Cratchit says that she will not thank Mr.Scrooge as he was never nice to them. However, Tim says that he will pray for Mr.Scrooge and says that he feels bad for Scrooge as he is always sad.

Spirit of Christmas Present then take Scrooge to Fred's house where they are having a Party. They are playing a guessing game. Party Guest 1 wants others to guess what he is thinking. When he reveals his answer which was Mr.Scrooge, Fred becomes sad.
Then Present and Scrooge come in a dark and shadowy place. For the first time ever, Scrooge offers Present something upon which Present becomes surprised and says that he will leave soon as he was somewhat successful. 2 kids appear before Scrooge named Innocent and Want. Both were orphans and looked hungry. Scrooge tried to help them but could not as he had to open the gates of his heart.


Act 2:

Scene 1: Now, Scrooge follows the Ghost of Christmas Future onstage (Scrooge doesn't recognize that it is a stage at first). Three merchants enter the stage and start talking about a man's death. Scrooge and Future see a person setting up a washing line and under it is a slow-burning fire beside which a person is keeping himself warm. Later, he realizes that the merchants that were talking about someone's death were actually talking about his (Scrooge's) death! Thus, Scrooge tries to fix his past so that he won't die at a young age.
