The Character Sketch/Analysis of Emma in The Lost: The Dark Ground. An old document that I wrote as an assignment I found in my computer... hope it helps!
Read below the Character Sketch for Emma in the novel "The Lost" by Gillian Cross.Character Sketch: Emma

Emma is the sister of the main character, Robert, in
the trilogy “The Lost” by Gillian Cross. The main role in this story is of
Robert Dohetry, and how he shrinks to a small size. She is the snobby sister
whom Robert dislikes, but later when Robert shrinks, he remembers her in a good
way. Most of the story is revolving around Robert and his new shrunken life,
which is why Emma does not appear much in the middle of the story.
Positive
traits: She is kind and tolerant, especially when Robert
tells her to help the people of the cavern. She does sincerely care for Robert,
but she does not show it. We can tell because in the end of the story, when
Robert becomes bigger, she complains that ‘Robert’ (the bigger one) had lately
been ignoring her and had become dull and dead, as if he were imagining
something.
Negative
traits: She does not believe anything until she sees it with
her own eyes. She only believes Robert when she sees two of him joining in the
end of the story. She is not imaginative. She is self-centered, and thinks
herself as superior, as we observe in the start of the story in the airplane
where she does not believe Robert and snubs him.
She has long, flowing blonde hair. She has a white
face. She is skinny and has long legs. Robert told her appearance in the start
of the story and in the end, where he sees her large looming body move as she
went to school. She is pretty but when Robert remembers her she always has a
mocking face.
We think Emma is a great addition to the story “The
Lost”, because all of us have some obstacles in life which Robert refers to as
a ‘snobby sister’. At first we think of them as rude and selfish but later,
when they departure, we remember them and they help us go ahead in life.
